This banana-chocolate-espresso-peanut-butter smoothie recipe will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. (Is that dramatic? I don’t think so.)
As I’ve been trying to be healthier and count calories and all of that super exciting stuff, I’ve been looking for ways to make the most of my meals. Unfortunately, my favorite morning lattes kind of kill the calorie count before the day even gets going. SO I’ve gotten hooked on making this espresso breakfast smoothie, which combines breakfast AND morning coffee.
You get a little fruit, protein and an energy boost all in one—plus, using espresso (brewed in my favorite Nespresso machine) instead of soy or almond milk cuts out so many calories and tastes amazing. Making and drinking this smoothie is my new favorite morning ritual, really fills me up and tastes SO GOOD. It’s the perfect size to blend in my Nutribullet and I throw it in a reusable Starbucks cold cup and go. (If I’m at home, I’m obsessed with these glass straws.) I’m literally ALWAYS running late in the morning, and even I have time for this.
If you’ve been thinking about trying an espresso smoothie, this recipe is my favorite.
(Funny story, Alex actually overheard a couple talking about this at Kroger last week. The guy thought his girlfriend was crazy for wanting to make a smoothie with coffee/espresso, and, like the good boyfriend he is, Alex interjected to tell him that I make espresso smoothies all the time and “they’re actually pretty good.” He now requests them on the reg.) Below are the core ingredients, but sometimes I’ll also throw in sound ground flax or chia seeds for an extra nutritional punch.
Espresso Breakfast Smoothie
- 1-2 Nespresso pods
- 1 banana
- 1 scoop Tone It Up Perfect Fit chocolate protein powder (my favorite vegan protein powder!)
- 1 tablespoon almond butter
- Ice
1. Brew Nespresso. (For 1 pod, brew using the lungo setting; for 2 pods, brew 1 lungo and 1 on the espresso setting—most days I use 2 just to really wake me up.) The Caramelito pods are my favorite for this recipe.
2. Add the banana, 1 scoop of protein powder (Alex likes to add two) and 1 tablespoon of almond butter (I like the creamy salted version from Trader Joe’s).
3. Add a handful of ice cubes and blend.
Enjoy!
