Emily Giffin on her new summer release, First Comes Love, why the Chicago stop on her book tour will be better than ever, and Something Blue movie details.
Emily Giffin’s new book is HERE!
Emily’s been one of my favorite authors since her first book, Something Borrowed, was released 10 years ago. Since then, she’s written seven more books, including the #1 New York Times bestselling hit The One & Only.
You can always count on Emily for a great beach read, and First Comes Love is no exception. I flew through it in one weekend at the pool and couldn’t wait to share it with you guys. She often writes about relationships, mostly romantic, but First Comes Love explores the relationship between two sisters, Josie and Meredith. Both sisters are at very different stages in in life as they figure out how to overcome grief, navigate complicated relationships and understand one another years after an unexpected tragedy strikes their family.
Emily will also be back in Chicago this year for her book tour! Her signings are always the BEST (in the past they’ve been at Bloomingdale’s and Saks, complete with a DJ, wine, desserts, etc.), and this year she’s taking it to the next level and hosting it at The Peninsula Chicago. You can still get tickets for the July 14 event!

What inspired you to write about the relationship between two sisters?
Sister stories have always been among my favorite in fiction. From the Quimby girls in Beezus and Ramona, to the March sisters in Little Women, to Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in Sense & Sensibility, I am drawn to novels that explore this unique, complex, and sometimes turbulent relationship. So I was excited to write First Comes Love, a story told from the alternating perspectives of two thirty-something sisters, Josie and Meredith, each facing a critical crossroads in her life, while struggling to come to terms with a family tragedy and the secrets that surround it. The book is about the sister bond, for sure, but also about marriage and motherhood, friendship and family. And of course it’s about love—it’s always about love!
What message do you hope readers will take away from First Comes Love?
That you can’t perfectly script your life. There will always be bad things that happen to you. But ultimately, we are in control of our lives. We can choose our way and decide to be happy.
Your book tour this time around is Girls Night Out themed. What can fans expect to be different about this tour?
My publisher, Random House, is the only publisher with a devoted special events department and they do a fantastic job of putting together these special “Girls Night Out” events to enhance the book signing experience. I love that we can incorporate some fun elements (and wine!) into the tour, because I want everyone who attends to have a good time. And, important to note—while we say these are “Girls Night Out” events, we very much welcome enlightened men as well!
Your Chicago signings are always so much fun! What made you want to host this year’s event at The Peninsula?
The Peninsula in Chicago is hands down my favorite hotel in the country! I always stay there whenever I’m in town and I was thrilled when they asked if I’d like to host my book signing there.
Any book-to-movie updates you can share with us?
Something Blue is definitely happening! We have a fantastic script—a wonderful, funny, heartwarming script written by an extremely talented husband-and-wife team (they revised my original draft and made it so much better)—that we are sending to Kate Hudson and John Krasinski. I’m hoping production begins shortly, and that we will see it in theaters next year! First Comes Love has also been optioned, and we are currently discussing whether to develop that for TV or for feature film. More to come on that soon!
Come see Emily and hear more about her new book, First Comes Love, Thursday, June 14 at The Peninsula in Chicago! And find more info on the rest of her upcoming tour dates here.
