Add these buzz-worthy new releases to your 2016 summer reading list! Perfect for the beach or pool, you won’t be able to put down these summer books.
A stack of good books is an obvious summer essential. Luckily, there’s no shortage of good new releases this summer, both from brand new authors and old favorites.
These are a few of the most-talked-about titles that you’ll want to add to your list (and suggest for your next book club pick).
1. Modern Lovers by Emma Straub
“The Vacationers” was one of my favorite summer reads of 2014, so of course I was pumped when I found out Emma Straub is back with another book. This time, friends and former bandmates Elizabeth, Andrew and Zoe are all grown up living in Brooklyn with kids of their own—and their own versions of a midlife crisis. Things get messy when their kids start to grow up, and hook up, as they too figure out that growing up doesn’t stop just because you’re considered an “adult.”
2. First Comes Love by Emily Giffin
Emily Giffin does not disappoint when it comes to beach reads, and her eighth book, “First Comes Love,” is no exception. Sisters Josie and Meredith are on very different life paths, both dealing with flawed relationships and figuring out how to overcome grief when an unexpected tragedy strikes their family. I have not been able to put this book down since I started it. (Emily Giffin is coming to Chicago on her book tour! Find more info and get tickets here.)
3. Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty
If you loved Liane Moriarty’s “Big Little Lies” and “The Husband’s Secret,” preorder “Truly Madly Guilty” now to tote to the beach this July when it’s released. In her latest read, three families must face the consequences of one night gone wrong at a neighborhood barbecue: “Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?”
4. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Not a light beach read by any means, but this story of two half sisters both in 18th-century Ghana is on everyone’s list this summer. One’s married to an Englishman living comfortably in Cape Coast Castle, where, little does she know, her half sister is living in the very same castle’s dungeons as a prisoner who gets sold into slavery. If you need a new book club idea, this is it.
5. Rich and Pretty by Rumaan Alam
Another book on everyone’s must-read list this summer, “Rich and Pretty” explores how childhood friendships grow and evolve into adulthood. Think Blair and Serena in 20 years.
6. The Girls by Emma Cline
Fourteen-year-old Evie starts hanging out with a group of seemingly cooler older girls and is slowly drawn into a dangerous cult in Northern California. “The Girls” is being called one of the most anticipated books of the year. Even Lena Dunham said “this book will break your heart and blow your mind.”
7. The Hopefuls by Jennifer Close
“The Hopefuls” is a juicy look inside the lives of two political couples, and what happens when jealousy and competition gets in the way of both marriage and friendship.
