The big day is finally here! After winning the TODAY Show wedding, Kaitlin and John flew back to Chicago for the weekend to do some shopping and fill us in on all the crazy details, and then were back to New York City on Monday morning to start planning their Big Fat TODAY Wedding. The first day they were back on the show, the voting started for the most important aspect of the wedding: the dress (and tux).
America voted on three options, one of which will be what Kaitlin and John are surprised with to wear for their big day.
Option 1: Timeless twist
This first dress was from Anthropologie’s new bridal line, BHLDN. This dress was the most whimsical of the three, with a tulle skirt, floral appliques, and low-V neck with an illusion top. The tux that paired with the first dress was your classic black tuxedo, by Joseph Abboud, with a black striped tie.
Reaction: The dress was gorgeous, but a little more bohemian than Kaitlin’s taste. It was definitely closest to the princess ballgown that she had in mind when she first envisioned her wedding dress. I wasn’t crazy about all of the appliques, but I do love BHLDN and was excited to see a dress from the new line in the mix. And you can’t go wrong with a classic black tux. I think I would’ve liked it more had the tie been a solid black, but overall this was a great look.
Option 2: Elegant affair
The Pronovias dress is perfect for an iconic New York wedding. The most simple and classic of the three dresses: a mermaid gown in a white crepe fabric with a plunging V-back and gemstone-embellished sleeves. TODAY described it as being Gatsby-esque, which is 100% spot on. The tux was a slim-fit navy blue Calvin Klein tuxedo with a bow tie. Also very in line with the Gatsby theme.
Reaction: This was by FAR my favorite pair of the three. I loved how elegant and classic the dress and was, with trendy elements but still completely timeless. The tux was also the favorite. John LOVES navy tuxes and you could tell on the air this was definitely his favorite. The slim fit is also a great look that’s similar to something he would wear in real life. It seems like this look just went with the whole New York wedding theme.
Option 3: Sexy switch
This Hayley Paige dress is actually a mini dress paired with a detachable skirt that you can pull off to reveal a shorter party dress for the reception. It has a lace bodice in a blush tone with an asymmetrical tulle skirt. The tux was Black by Vera Wang, a gray tux with a black bowtie.
Reaction: While I LOVE the idea of a detachable, two-in-one dress, this one missed the mark for me. The skirt felt too trendy and the “mini” dress underneath was almost knee length. Lots of commenters on social media and friends at work said the mini dress felt too much like a slip rather than a dress. The blush bodice also felt too detached from the bright white tulle skirt. The gray tux was great, and the dress was gorgeous, but it didn’t seem very “Kaitlin” to me.
Prediction: Based on all of the reactions on social media and from our friends and family, it seems like Option 2, Elegant Affair, was the most popular choice. It got my vote! But with three beautiful dress and tux options, Kaitlin and John will look amazing and be incredibly well dressed no matter what America decides.
America also voted today on their wedding welcome sign. All three options were designed by Sheila Dodson-Wright, owner and lead designer at Tableau Events. They were all amazing and gorgeous, but I think the first one was the crowd favorite because it was location based. This also went perfectly with dress option number 2 and really encompassed the feel of the New York wedding. It’s something I can see being framed and hung in their house, too, which is very cool. The perfect keepsake to remember their big day!
Kaitlin and John wrapped up a fun day of bridal fashion by walking the red carpet at the premier of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, casually hanging out with producer Tom Hanks and John Corbett, who will forever be Aidan from Sex & the City in my heart.
